The story behind the design

Pip & The Blue Bird

Curious about how our new tableware collection came about? For Pip & The Blue Bird, we take you behind the scenes. The design team shares how sketches, brushstrokes and digital refinement came together to create a collection full of character. From the initial idea to the final detail: this is the story behind the design.

From sketch to tableware

A unique hand-painted collection

It always starts with paper, pencil and a head full of ideas. For this collection, pen drawings and watercolours were combined: clean lines drawn by hand, soft colours painted with a brush. The result is a classic design with a modern twist. Each element was carefully constructed, layer by layer, until it was just right, on paper and soon on your table.

How to style the collection

For a classic table setting with a modern twist

The collection plays with contrasts: graphic patterns are mixed with elegant dip-dye edges, inspired by old techniques but applied in a modern way. Golden scales and dots add a classic touch and an extra luxurious feel. Each plate and tray features the iconic Pip icon in relief, a refined detail that stands out. When you stack the plates with the icon at 7 o'clock, all the gold elements fit together perfectly. The three plates with a plain edge provide extra contrast to the collection as a whole. They are designed to be combined with a smaller size with a print on top.

The eye-catcher of the collection

A showpiece for your table

For this collection, everything had to be just that little bit different. Special moulds were developed: bowls that are slightly more open so that you can see the design beautifully, plates and trays with an elegant cut-out, and a brand new mug that tapers upwards. This way, everything matches in style. The real eye-catcher of the collection is the large tray, which truly steals the show. The iconic bird, the graphic edges, the soft flowers, everything that makes this collection so special is reflected in this item.

The designer's favourite

The small cup with a gold rim

Of all the items in the collection, the small cup is the designer's favourite. The Blue Bird sits gracefully on a line and almost seems to sing. If you look closely, you can see how the gold rim stops precisely at the crest and transitions into a clean line, a detail that is not only beautiful but also functional. The back is particularly beautifully styled and fits seamlessly with the rest of the design.
